Nominated Treating Doctor — What It Means

You have the right to choose your own treating doctor for your WorkCover claim. Here's what that means and how to exercise it.

What Is a Nominated Treating Doctor?

Your Nominated Treating Doctor (NTD) is the medical practitioner who manages your WorkCover claim on an ongoing basis. They issue your Certificates of Capacity, develop your return-to-work plan, arrange referrals, and coordinate your treatment. The NTD is your primary medical contact for everything related to your work injury.

Your Right to Choose

Under the NSW workers compensation system, you have the legal right to choose your own Nominated Treating Doctor. Your employer and insurer cannot force you to see a particular doctor for your ongoing treatment. You can choose any AHPRA-registered medical practitioner, including a Claims Doctor practitioner.

How to Change Your Doctor

If you are unhappy with your current treating doctor — perhaps they are unfamiliar with WorkCover requirements, appointments are difficult to get, or your certificates are being rejected — you can change your NTD at any time. Simply book a consultation with your new doctor and inform your insurer that you are changing your treating practitioner. There is no formal application process.

Can Claims Doctor Be My NTD?

Yes. You can nominate a Claims Doctor practitioner as your Nominated Treating Doctor. We manage your certificates, treatment coordination, and referrals for the life of your claim. Same-day appointments ensure your certificates are always current and your treatment is not disrupted. Learn about our WorkCover service →
